f you answer the above question by saying ‘nothing!’ then you might want to find a Highland Falls Intermediate School student who is enrolled in the CONNECT program and ask them! In their art class topics of discussions recently were cherry blossoms in Japan, and festivals called ‘Sakura’ a springtime tradition of viewing the flowers, and the word ‘Hanami’ which means flower viewing. The students then designed their own ‘Sometsuke’ vases, which are the very famous blue and white porcelain found in Japan. And, since they were “in Japan”, they talked about the structure of Pagodas, not only their designs and details but how they were built to withstand earthquakes. Note the great interpretations they created! CONNECT is the free, afterschool program provided to second through sixth graders; for more of their activities follow them on Facebook at Hudson Valley Program.
