“Countdown to a Dream”: Space Shuttle Astronaut Mike Mullane Visits CONNECT

USMA ’67 graduate Colonel Mike Mullane always dreamed of being an astronaut. Visiting West Point for his reunion, Colonel (Ret.) Mullane took time out of his busy schedule to share his inspirational life story with the students of CONNECT.

Upon graduating from the United States Military Academy Col. Mullane served in Vietnam as a pilot, flying 134 combat missions in 1969. After a four year tour in Europe he became a flight test weapon systems officer and in 1978 was selected by NASA to become an astronaut. Col. Mullane flew on three Space Shuttle missions, including the maiden flight of Discovery.

CONNECT students were curious about his time in space, wondering how he went to the bathroom and what it was like in space, and to ride a rocket. Generous with his time and attentive to their questions he answered each and every one, even taking time to have photo’s taken.
