This week’s field trip took us on an educating adventure where our students learned about electrical engineering. Our 3rd and 4th graders were invited to go to Thayer Hall at West Point to make holiday cards. Students were grouped with cadets who specialize in electrical engineering and mathematics. Students learned about key terms and functions of a battery, switch, circuit, conductor, insulator and much more. They watched a video that explained electrical circuits in a simple and straightforward way. They used their bodies along with tape on the floor to demonstrate the flow of electricity in a circuit. The students were each handed a bag with all the supplies to create a circuit of their own. They placed the metal strips on paper and then glued down the batteries so that when folded together completed the circuit and a small LED light lit up. They spent the rest of the trip creatively designing their own cards. At the end of the day they glued the circuit to the inside of the card to create their own light up masterpiece. Thank you to the USMA Electrical Engineering & Mathematics Departments and the Cadets who participated in making this special opportunity happen.
